As we are trying to limit waste during your stay, here are some recommendations for sustainable options to purchase food in Akaroa.
For your meat needs:
T Dunn and Julia Atkinson-Dunn are the fantastic owners of the Akaroa Butchery, Deli and Pantry. They provide a large range of meat from New Zealand, such as grass-fed beef and lamb cuts, free-farmed pork, venison, Akaroa salmon, organic chicken and a wide range of in-house sausages, bacon, sliced ham and salamis. They try their best to also offer most options gluten-free.
To help reduce packaging waste for our guests, they have agreed to serve food in containers, so we have a few stocked at our office that we will happily lend.
For your dried goods and fruits, and Vegetables:
If you need dry food, Marine at Nomad Wholefood has you covered. Most foods are organic and sold in bulk, from beans, lentils, grains, rice, pastas, nuts and seeds to seasonal fruits and vegetables. She also has a small selection of sustainable toiletries.
Treat yourself:
Finally, if you want to embrace the French history of Akaroa while staying at Pōhatu, you need to stop at A la Baguette and meet Sam, the very passionate French baker. He has a rather yummy selection of Baguettes, Sourdough bread, Croissants, Almond Croissants, and Pain au Raisin, among other goodies.
